The proposed new school at Tal-Handaq
| The Malta Environment and Planning
Authority has approved the construction of a Lm3 million school at Tal-Handaq,
which the Education Ministry said would be of the same standard of St Benedict
College built by the government at Kirkop.
The need for the new school arose after the building formerly used by the British services and which housed the school no longer remained suitable for schooling. However it will continue to be used until the new building is completed in two years' time. |
The plans for the new school were drawn up by the Foundation
of Tomorrow's Schools.
The ministry said that an application for a new car park and landscaping works in the school area is to be made to Mepa in the coming weeks. A new street will also be constructed to replace the existing one, which cuts through the school grounds. The ministry said that upgrading works are also expected to start on the Verdala School in the coming months. |
Preparatory work is also in hand for a new secondary school
in Mosta and a new primary school at Pembroke.
Since its setting up, apart from establishing standards on how schools should be built and renovated, the foundation has invested around Lm16 million in the construction and maintenance of schools, the ministry said. |
Commitee Note:-
As you all know we are mindful of the 'Anchor Tile' in the entrance to the 'New' School Hall and our collections are intended to ensure its recovery should the Hall be demolished. At the moment we have been assured that the Hall will be retained intact, but if that were not the case the funds would be used to create a plaque using the tile as an historic reminder of the 'Royal Naval School - Tal-Handaq'.
A communication from Mr Marc Spiteri has now reminded us all that time is running out if we wish to revisit the 'old' school. He says: "The new school will be ready for the beginning of the 2008/09 scholastic year, if not before". He reports that work will start in the next few months to demolish most of the old huts but NOT the school hall or the gym/changing rooms. It would appear that the bulk of the new building will take place on the concrete tennis courts area. Clearly, wherever the building commences, the old site will never look quite the same once the development process begins and new access roads and car parks are developed.
