Tal-Handaq School Redevelopment Storyboard
|
21st February 2006 - It has started! On 22nd February 2006 we received an e-mail from Marc Spiteri that signalled the start of reconstruction at the old Royal Naval School Tal-Handaq site. The Committee hope that , by means of this 'Storyboard' and our close links with the Tal Handaq staff and Mr Marc Spiteri in particular, we will be able to keep you up to date with the gradual redevelopment between now and 2009, when the progamme is due for completion. |

22 February 2006 Marc Spiteri reports: "Just a short message to let you know that work on the
school has started. it all began on the 21st of February and has mainly
consisted in the removal of the fences and poles surrounding the concrete tennis
and hockey courts. Over the weekend the excavation work on the grounds should
start. It's sad to think of those greedy machines eating away at the Handaq we have always known but there is little to be done and the old must make way for the new". |

"Day 2 of
the works basically involved the setting up of fencing barriers to separate the
construction site from the rest of the school. the poles removed from the courts
are now being reused for the fencing. We are now
heading for a long weekend since Monday and Tuesday are carnival holidays. I
will be going in every day to take photos and keep a somewhat updated
journal." |
| 11 March 2006 Marc Spiteri reports: "The current work is mostly excavation works and the removal of rubble. Apparently what's going to happen next is the removal of a section of rock near Block 9, in an attempt to increase the playing areas for the students. Due to the works we have so far lost a great part of the playing areas available". |

An observation: Looking south, the large hangars on the horizon above the two diggers remind us just how close the school was to RAF Luqa. The valley between may also bring back memories of many a long cross-country run!! |
Tuesday 13th June 2006 The President of Malta, Dr. Edward Fenech Adami visited the old RN School Tal Handaq, Qormi, to lay down the foundation stone of the new secondary school that will be built next to the Mikiel Anton Vassalli Junior Lyceum. It is estimated that the new Mikiel Anton Vassalli School will be ready by the end of 2007. Dr Galea explained that tenders for services will be issued soon and the new school should be completed in 2008. |
