Having spent 17 years on the Island, I found the
entire Malta Reunion magical. Our visit to Farsons on 16th September 2000
was particularly memorable for me as it marked the 50th anniversary
of our family move from Sliema to one of the new houses constructed
on top of the Brewery.
It was wonderful to be met at the gate by Joe
Farrugia whom I had known since childhood and whose father had worked with
mine since 1946 when they were still at the old Farsons brewery in Hamrun.
The photograph of Joe and me outside our old front door (now the entrance
to Credit Control) has brought back happy memories for my parents who remained
at the Brewery until 1982, when my father retired from the Company.
However, the most evocative part of the plant,
for me, was the Brew House with its wonderful polished copper vessels.
As a six year old I had been impressed by their size, particularly when
I accompanied my father when he drove behind the low loader
which transported the copper Mash Tun along the narrow roads from
the docks.
The excellent video, we were shown on our arrival,
filled in many gaps in my knowledge of the history of the Company but it
also demonstrated how the firm has kept ahead by embracing new technology
and diversifying.
Following
an interesting tour of the plant, which included the new Process Block,
we progressed to the important phase of the visit – the sampling!
Here, I was delighted to be welcomed by Mr Anthony Miccelli who had been
the Managing Director during my father’s time and later Chairman.
It was good to have the opportunity to thank the Company, through him, for making the visit possible and I was delighted to have the opportunity to present them with a Tal Handaq plaque.
